This mix is bursting with native wildflowers and grasses that will help restore your area to native prairie habitat and offer healthy habitat for pollinating insects, birds, small mammals and other wildlife. This mix includes 54% wildflowers and 45% grasses at 8 pounds per acre of pure live seed, ensuring consistent cover and blooms throughout the season.
As many of our native grasses are “bunch grasses”, the bulk of the plant height will be in the 2-3' range, but flowering stems of grasses and forbs could reach 4-5’ tall at maturity. Here are the species included (subject to slight change based on nursery availability):
Wildflowers: Common Milkweed, Butterfly weed, Sand Coreopsis, Rough Blazingstar, Bee Balm (wild bergamot), Foxglove Beard-Tongue, Yellow Coneflower, Black-Eyed Susan, Grass-Leaved Goldenrod, Smooth Blue Aster, Ohio Spiderwort, Hoary Vervain
Grasses: Big Bluestem, Little Bluestem, Switch Grass, Indian Grass, Canada Wildrye
When to plant and pick up: We recommend a November frost seeding. Spread the seed after a good hard frost so it overwinters and germinates well next growing season. Planting earlier, such as in September, can cause seed to sprout and then be killed by frost.
