Stream Monitoring - Big Sable River
We'd love for you to join us for macroinvertebrate sampling in the coming weeks. This is a fun chance to meet other amazing volunteers, wade in a river, collecting insects that will help us monitor the health of the river. We have two rivers that we are planning to tackle and we need volunteer helpers! Details below are for the Big Sable River.
Volunteers should plan to dress for the weather, wear long sleeves, long pants, rain jacket and closed-toed shoes (poison ivy occurs in some areas). We can lend out waders or knee boots if you let us know ahead of time. Volunteers can wade in the stream to collect macroinvertebrates with nets, pull logs and rocks, or hang out streamside and pull insects from these items and sort for later identification. No experience needed and we'll provide all equipment. Hope to see you out there!
Meet at 9am on US31, park across the road from Doc's Sable River Inn. Sampling this site and maybe carpooling to a 2nd site at Stephens Rd. Sampling generally goes 10-2. Bring a lunch!

Autumn Olive Management Workshop
Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) is a non-native invasive shrub that is a serious problem for many landowners in our area. It was first introduced in the mid 1800’s for windbreaks, wildlife food and erosion control. It now invades pastures, forests, yards, electrical corridors and parks. The fruit produced is low in protein and fat but high in carbohydrates, making it less nutritious for wildlife than the native plants it displaces. Attempts to control the encroachment of this aggressive shrub are often unsuccessful.
So, what is a landowner to do? How do you get rid of this menace of a plant? Come to the Autumn Olive workshop taking place on August 8th from 2-4 pm at Pere Marquette Conservation Park, 1560 S. Lakeshore Dr. in Ludington. Conservation District staff will be there to share current information on autumn olive control and demonstrate different treatment techniques. Details about NRCS brush management cost share through Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) will also be shared. The workshop will end with a demonstration using the techniques discussed. For those who need it, Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP)/certification credits will be available. This workshop is free and there is no registration required. For questions call Mason-Lake Conservation District at (231) 757-3707.
MAEAP - Well Water Nitrate Testing (Lake County)

Birding in Your Backyard
Birding in Your Backyard is a four-part series focused on the birds all around us. Topics include birding in our area, creating a backyard wildlife habitat, bird photography, and birds in the arts and humanities. No experience is needed—just an interest in birds!
Each session is held on the third Tuesday of the month (May through August) at the Ludington Library.
Our forester, Josh Shields, will be presenting during the June session—don’t miss it!
This presentation will be about the components of wildlife habitat (food, water, cover, and space) and different ways that landowners can provide these components. The particular focus will be on creating such habitats for wildlife (including songbirds!) in backyard settings, with local examples.
Nature Walk & Talk
Come to The Barn at Shagway with Certified Forester, Wildlife Biologist, and Arborist Josh Shields from the Michigan Forestry Assistance Program at the Manistee and Mason-Lake Conservation Districts.
