Wildlife Education Program Available By Lynda Herremans
Thanks to two separate donations by the Mason County Fin & Feather Club and a 2005 Dow Community Grant, the Mason-Lake Conservation District now has an excellent supply of wildlife skins, skulls and other “hands on” education materials. District wide schools and special interest groups are encouraged to call to schedule a presentation. Presentations can be geared to any age group and to the topic desired.
Two separate wildlife kits are also available for check out by teachers who would like to use the materials in their classrooms. One of the kits includes 8 full size mammal skins with matching skulls and a key guide book for skull identification. Also included are a bird song identifier and a variety of other materials. The other is a “Make a Match” kit. This Resource Kit includes a patch of fur from 10 different mammals, a drawing of the track, a picture of the animal, a coloring sheet and an information sheet. Also included are 10 plant information sheets with a photo, representing a food source for each animal.
A sampling of the skins and skulls were used in the district’s display at the Western Michigan Fair and the materials will also be used by the district for the Western Michigan Old Engine Club Education Day. Give Lynda a call at 757-3708x3 to schedule your presentation or to check out a kit! |
