Boneset (Eupatorium perfolialum):

 

Grows in full sun in moist to wet soils.  It is a hairy plant with dense flat-topped clusters of many dull-white flowers.  Blooms from July to October.  The stem appears to be growing through the leaf.  Grows to a height of 30-48 inches and has a spread of 16-25 inches.

Culiver’s Root (Veronicastrum virginicum):

 

This plant makes a good cut flower.  It’s pinkish white flowers bloom on upright plants.  Flowers bloom for four to six weeks in late summer.  Grows in full sun to partial shade in moderate moisture.  Grows to heights of 36-48 inches with a 24-48 inch spread. 

False Boneset (Khunia eupatoides):

 

False Boneset grows in dry prairies and sandy soils.  The plant grows up to four feet tall.  It has toothed or smooth alternate leaves.  Leaves on the upper stems are smaller than lower leaves.  Prefers full to partial sun and sandy soils and dry conditions.  Blooms in the summer.

Foxglove Beard Tongue (Penstemon digitalis):

 

Blooms in May and June and provides nectar for hummingbirds.  This handsome plant has attractive seed heads and foliage that turns reddish in the fall.  Grows in average to moist well-drained soils.  Prefers full to medium sun.  Makes a nice fresh cut flower.

New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americanus):

 

A low growing compact shrub that’s excellent for hot, dry sites. Billows of delicate white flowers form at the end of young branches in May and June.  Clusters of small black fruit form in July and August.  Prefers full to partial sun.  This shrub attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and song birds.

Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium):

 

This plant has sword-shaped, medium green leaves and is topped by clusters of round heads of greenish white flowers resembling thistles.  Grows in full sun to medium sun in dry soils.  Grows to 48-60 inches in height with a spread of 24 inches.  This plant is deer resistant.

Thimbleweed (Anemone cylindrical):

 

This plant is about 1-2 feet tall.  The basal leaves occur in whorls from long stalks that emerge out of the ground.  From each whorl of the secondary leaves emerges a long stalk bearing a single white flower.  Each flower is about 3/4 inches across.  It prefers full to partial sun and will grow in just about any soil that is not wet.

 

White Turtlehead (Chelone glabra):

 

This creamy white snapdragon like lower has a tight head at the top of the plant.  Flowers in August and September.  It prefers full sun and moist to wet soils.  Grows 2-4 feet in height with a 2 foot spread.  It is the major host of the Baltimore butterfly (a large black butterfly with white and orange spots.
