BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Conservation Districts are entities

of state government with statutory

powers and responsibilities to

achieve a program of soil and

water conservation and encourage

wise land management. As locally

 elected public officials, district

directors are responsible for

the operation and management

of the conservation district. They

develop policy, which is carried out

by employees and resource

personnel available to the district.

A district board must use all

available resources to attain an

effective resource

conservation program.

ABOUT OUR DISTRICT

The Mason-Lake Conservation District was organized in 1940 as the Mason County Soil Conservation, the 6th district in Michigan. Later, the district was expanded to cover all of Mason County and the west half of Lake County resulting in the Mason-Lake Soil

Conservation District. Recently, the “Soil” was eliminated from the name to better reflect the broad range of District activities.

USDA Natural Resources Conservation

Service (formerly USDA Soil Conservation Service) provides us with office space and technical expertise in exchange for clerical/office organization. Though the District is separate from USDA, we work together to provide technical assistance to you.

The District receives a portion of their funding from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and the Mason and Lake County Boards of Commissioners. We also apply for and receive various grants to be used for specific programs.  Our biggest source of funding, however, is generated through the various programs and services we offer.
